How do I calculate this out I currently heat my home and hot water with fuel oil. I know gallon for gallon propane is cheaper but fuel oil also has alot more BTU's per gallon. How can I calculate which will be cheaper?

  1. Simple answer. Yes!

  2. WHAT ALL IS ENVOLED IN SWITCHING FROM HEATING OIL TO PROPANE?

IF THE COST OF CHANGING OVER IS LESS THAN YOUR BILL FOR 5 YEARS THEN IT PROBABLY WOULD BE WORTH IT,DUE TO HIGH COST OF OIL.

  3. I've been in the propane business for 20 years. This is the first time I've ever seen oil costing more than electricity to heat a home!

Right now, in the greater Toronto area, for every dollar you spend on electricity for home heat you would spend $1.37 for oil and just under a dollar for propane.Natural gas would be only $0.57!

You aren't going to use 2 or 3 times the fuel going from oil to propane. If you install good, high efficiency appliances you probably wont use much more volume of fuel than you were with your older less efficient oil appliances. There is less btu's in propane than oil, but it's not that drastic a difference.

  4. The question is not really one of cost but of cleanliness and life expectancy between Fuel oil and Propane. Propane has it's drawbacks. It is heavier than air. Fuel oil is dirty and smelly and can leak causing health hazards.

The number of useful Btu's extracted may be far different than the number contained in the product due to efficiencies.

The area you live in can also determine average BTU's contained in the product you receive. They are not all the same for instance one Province has natural gas that is sold as containing 1000 BTU's per cubic foot but the next Province has no standard and sells their gas with only 7-800 BTU's per cubic foot for the same price.

  5. figure you will use at least 2 and probably three times more propane than fuel oil............tom
