i just got a hdtv. so i called directv to get an upgrade. bottom line they said i could get a hd receiver..with no dvr. {i have a dvr but i guess it won't work now if i change?} so i asked for a quote.

she told me for no dvr..100 dollars plus a shipping and handling fee of 30.

if i want a dvr it will cost me way over 200. i was rather annyoed by this because i have been a customer of theirs for over ten years and they offered no deal whatsoever? then my friend was telling me about comcast and how i could switch and save....and that they have on demand.

should i switch? is comcast better? and what kind of "deal" could i get on getting a hd dvr?

thanks for any help!

  1. My dad was able to haggle an extra free box. Get back on the phone and explain to them how you've been a customer for years, and you'd really like a dvr. Threaten to switch if they don't give you a discount. And if the don't, switch to another company.

  2. Here is the thing with Directv, the fees you are talking about is 99 for the hd and 199 for the hd dvr plus shipping and taxes. The catch is that you are not purchasing this equipment. Those are upfront lease fees and you will never own the receivers plus there are monthly fees. You could try to threaten disconnecting and may get a receiver with no upfront cost but you will have to agree to a 2 year commitment whether you pay the fees or not. There is no way around this regardless of how long you have been a customer.

  3. This is exactly why I avoid DirecTV like the plague. They are a total rip-off with their equipment charges.

Comcast will definitely save you money. The DV-R box will probably cost you $9.99 a month. You don't have to buy it, they just give it to you and you pay the monthly fee.

If you have the chance to get Verizon FiOS, they are the best I've found. They are about $20 – $30 cheaper a month than Comcast. Comcast will also be cheaper than DirecTV. If I were you, I'd switch.
