Question:

Is it worth it to buy a new N router.?

I recently got a new laptop with a wireless N card. Currently I have a Wireless G router. It supposedly connects up to 108mpbs but it only seems to connect at a maximum of 54mbps. Also I have ATT DSL 6.0 which says it is 6mbps. Would buying a new Wireless N Router make a difference in my connection speed? Or would I simply have a faster router but be limited by the speed of my connection making little difference.

  1. Well you have 54mbs local connection with your G router, you have 6mbs on the internet. Changing the LOCAL speed isn't going to change the internet speed just the LOCAL network speed.

N is great for local file access but does little to change you r internet speed. (Even 802.11b -11 mbs would be faster than your internet at this point!)

  2. The 108 Mbs number is probably a "Super G" product marketed as being twice as fast. It is not a standard and probably won't go that fast with any other card but the ones from the vendor that made the router.

N on the other hand, will be a standard.

Both can step back automatically to G speeds, so it doesn't really matter what you get, given your DSL is at 6 Mbs.
