Is it worth it to buy the umbrella policy under your car insurance?

If you can afford to pay for a catastrophic loss in which you are legally liable, then don't bother.  However, I doubt that is the case.  Buy the umbrella coverage especially if you have assets.

Umbrellas are extremely cheap for the coverage you get.  A basic umbrella usually gives $1,000,000 of extra liability coverage over and above what you already have on your cars and homes.  Premiums can vary greatly but in upstate NY it can be as little as $100 a year if you have just 1 car and 1 home.  Umbrella coverage is an absolute godsend if you're ever sued.

i agree with Lawnboy...if you have any assets (house, business. etc) buy the umbrella.  they are cheap and worth the protection
