  1. Yes. Walk. Yes, but I don't know about getting them up that frickin' mountain bro'.  Not if you speak Spanish.

  2. Is this a trick question? :)

    Absolutely, at any time!

If your time and/or budget is limited then the most convenient services available are those that operate from Ollantaytambo. There are multiple services operating between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu and they are called Backpacker Cerrojo and Vistadome Valle. Leaving Ollantaytambo early in the morning and returning from Machu Picchu in the late afternoon will allow you to make the most of your time if you can only spend 1 day there. However, I recommend spending 2 days there if you can. You can see schedules and prices for the trains and make reservation requests at http://www.cusco-travel-services.com/Pas... who will pick up and deliver your tickets to whichever accommodation location you select in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

You don't need a guide but I would suggest finding a good book on the site which you could keep as a souvenir of your trip along with the many photos you will take.

If you can spend 2 days there then another trek you can do whilst there which will give you a different view of the Machu Picchu site is described at the following site.

This trek requires no entry fee.

  3. It beats never seeing it for sure!  You CAN'T go to Peru and skip it.  Absolutely worth it.  They don't have it listed as a New 7th Wonder for nothing. So if you only have a day trip available, then do it.

If you can spend one night, go to Aguas Calientes the night before and get a hostel, get on one of the first busses up in the morning, getting there before all the tourists get off the train at midday. It is the best way to go.

It's not cheap.  $50 entry fee just for MP.  But you can package a deal if you do some research, or stay in a hostel. It is absolutely worth the trip, the place is magical, magnificent, beautiful, and a lot of mystery surrounds it.  You won't understand til you see it for yourself.

  4. Yes, it´s absolutely worth the trip and money.

Orient express trains are the only ones to get there, unless you do the inca trail and take the 2 or 4 day hike.

As Machu Pichu is not labelled, you will probably need a tour guide unless you just read a lot about it and just enjoy the beautiful city...

It´s a must see attraction in Peru!

  5. Absolutely, go.  Check out the orient express website for tickets. There are severall price options. We hired a guide for  a few days at about $60 per day plus his lodging a few years ago.

I would suggest staying over night. But, if that is not possible, take the early train from Cuzco to MP. Once you get to the entrance,  go straight ahead  through MP to Huayna Picchu. This is the peak to the right in many photographs. It is worth the climb which is not difficult. Just watch where you put you feet because the steps are uneven. The view is priceless. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Keep an eye on the time so you don't miss the late train.

If you stay overnight, your ticket allows you to enter the park at night.

    Have a great time.
