My 2002 BMW 330 Cic motor is blown. Shop says it will cost $6500 to replace with a used (~80,000) motor. Car is probably worth $16000 running. Everything else on the car is still great condition. Worth saving or part it out? TIA

  1. / I put a new engine in one of my past BMW's.  It cost $9,000.00 several years ago.  I have no regrets, and enjoyed the car for quite a long time afterward.

When I sold the car through a private sale, the new motor was a plus for the sale, but I wasn't looking to get all of my money back.  I was very satisfied with my decision.

The cost of purchasing a new vehicle, and the depreciation of that new vehicle helped me with the consideration.

  2. Of course it is worth saving if the general condition of the car is still good.

And while the price consideration in doing an engine swap is very important, getting a cheap quote might turn out to be a nightmare.

More important  is the condition of the engine that would be installed, second is the capability and reputation of the shop or person that is going to install it. Will they stand behind the engine and their job? Any 2 bit mechanic can swap an engine...

Cheap or cheapest is not always good when it comes to a BMW.

  3. My answer is YES.............but I have a mechanic, licensed, that works out of his own garage, would charge 1/2 of that price for the engine............if that happened to my car, I would do it..........

    good luck in your decision.

  4. If you planing to keep this car then you should considerit, but shop aroung, Try to find people that do jobs on side, This way you would be able so say half of what you would pay to some one that has its on shop.
