  1. Hey big guy! Thanks for the best answer. Let's see how can I help out again. First things first, to use any kind of stop leak of "Steel seal" is going to do exactly what it is suppose to do. Seal everything. With that being said he coats and gums up EVERYTHING in the coolant system. So for a temporary fix it may work. So thats a possibility. When you get it home try having a different shop look at it. Here's something to look at leak the car cool off. Make sure you have engough coolant in it and open the coolant jug cap on that GM. It doesn't have a radiator cap if I'm not mistaken. Whenever it get a little warmer watch and see if you see any really small bubbles. If you do then that means you have a exhaust leaking into the engine. Indicates a bad head gasket. Also Check your oil dipstick. If it is a milky substance then that would indicate that you have coolant mixing with your oil. That also indicates a bad head gasket. Get a reputable shop to do a pressure test. That will usually indicate where it is overheating. Two things make a car overheat. Either a blockage in coolant or a loss of coolant. There's also a bad fan, but to keep things simple think of those two. If you are retaining all of your cooland then you have a blockage. Poss radiator, heater core, hose. Don't worry about it yet. Good Luck and look forward to hearing from you!

  2. No, band-aids don't work on broken arms.

    Get the gasket replaced.

  3. Band aid solution is no solution especially when it come to fix a car. When the baid aid falls off, the car would quit on you. Worst still, if you are in the midst of nowhere. Even if you're in the city, assuming there is no damage, you still need to tow the car to a garage to replace the gasket. Why not do it now. At least that would save you some towing money.

  4. Why would you replace the engine for a blown head gasket?

On the other hand, use that garbage Steel seal, and you will be replacing the engine. It will plug tight passages and cut off oil flow to a dozen areas of the motor.

  5. replace the head gasket properly.

external fixes won't last a mile.

  6. replacing the engine... judging from the fact that it's a 97.. it's an LT1 or LS1 V8... you are talking about $5K.

Replacing the head gasket will probably run you about $500 or so. MisterGasket sells wonderful gaskets. if you can do it yourself, you will probably save 2/3rds the cost in repairs.

  7. Do your self a big favor replace the head gasket

it is alot cheeper than swaping motors & alot less work.
