i want to join the navy as a clearance diver and i would have to serve for 6 years or so. i also want to be a plumber and i would have to do an apprenteship for four years, is that a good idea or should i just join the army as a plumber and serve for 6 years and forget about clearance diving.

  1. well if you join the Army (or marines) you probably won't learn too much about plumbing, DO UNION APPRENTICESHIP, I talk to military tradesman everyday that learn squat and almost never pick up a tool, and even after you get out your time in the military will mean S**t to the unions and you will still have to do the full 5 year apprenticeship, I signed with the Army as 21r interior electrician but after talking with many 21r's and other 21's and hearing the same stories of not having work to do so you end up doing whatever odd jobs need done, I resigned into Infantry (before I shipped) it all depends on what YOU want, 5 years from now do you want to be making $30 an hour as a journeyman, or still have a year left on contract plus 5 years away from journeyman status?

  2. Ask yourself what you really want to do.  In the grand scheme of things 6 years is only a long time if you are doing a job that you dislike.

I have been serving in the Army and love my job.  And I can remember being a young officer saying I can't believe that the first year went by so fast.

If you're going to join the military do what you really want to do.  The time will go by quickly after you finish training and you will find that you have a more rewarding career
