Is it worth opening a public website just for ad revenue?

Not sure if I should build my own site or not. I'm not sure the ad revenue would be worth it. How much can you make running ads on your site and does it go up the more hits your site gets?

  1. In order to get ad revenue, you need to put a lot of work into a site.  A site that gets no traffic won't pull in any ad revenue through adsense or through anyone wanting to advertise.  No one will want to advertise on a site with little to no people visiting.

Sites that can charge hundreds or thousands for an ad have thousands to millions of hits each day.

  2. If your initial focus is only on making money, chances are your site won't be very successful. It takes a long time for a website to become profitable, and you need to be passionate about the subject matter. You need staying power. It takes a while for websites to take off. Maybe your site will only get one visitor a day for the first six months. If that happens, will you still follow through?

If not, probably better to invest your time in something else.
