Question:

Is it worth replacing the following parts? Or should I just sell and buy different car?

I have a 1995 Honda Prelude Si with 136000miles. I don't know if the timing belt has been replaced, I recently acquired car 1 year ago. Dealer says it should be replaced to be sure. Is there anyway I can tell if it needs replacing again?

Also, I need new muffler, drive belts and power steering belt, sometime in the near future.

I don't know how much all of that will cost, but I am wondering if I should spend that kind of money on this car or just get a newer car. There is nothing else wrong with the car at all and it runs good. I just need some guidance as to the smartest thing to do. Any help is appreciated.

  1. It's much cheaper to buy belts, than to buy a new car! The belts are pretty easy to replace, and you probably can do it yourself, with some basic tools. Those items are normal maintenance items, that need attention every 100k miles or so. If your belts are shot, you should also check your brakes. Good luck!

  2. Find another mechanic that won't try to fix what doesn't need fixed.

  3. ditch the honda and get a gm car or ford even

  4. if you replace timing belt need to replace water pump too

    better safe then sorry

see if it good yes but did water pump and idler pulley change or not

better extra 50 to 100 bucks then new head just because save on not replacing these parts

yes keep it if car nice and u like it

buying another one  may have same prob

  5. For a muffler and some belts I would keep this car but soon it will start to have problems more severe- then I would buy another.

  6. if your car is excellent condition its worth around 6000$    so yes it would b worth doing what you need.  if the car is paid for i would  spend the money to fix it.  its cheaper to work on 1 thats paid for and not have to worry about payments also

  7. The mileage is actually very low for that car.  If it was me I would definitely keep it.  You can tell if it needs replacing by just a looking at the underside of the belt itself.  All of the grooves should still be somewhat smooth without any cracks or breaks in it.  And if you're not sure, any mechanic or gearhead could probably take a look at it for free.  A new muffler and belts shouldn't cost more than $1000 at an automotive shop.  Going to the dealer will probably make it over $2000.  When you do replace all those parts i recommend that you also get a full tune up.  With that done you can expect that car to get well over 200k miles if you keep up with the maintenence.
