Question:

Is it worth retaking a part of the SATs that I received an 800 on the first time?

Yea, I know that I am lucky and this is a good problem to have. I took the SAT Reasoning in May and got an 800 on the Math section. This fall, I am planning on retaking the test. Therefore, I was wondering if it would be wise to simply leave the entire Math Section blank, take a 200, and focus totally on the Critical Reading and Writing sections (in which I recieved a 620 and 650 respectively). Would this hurt my application towards the Ivy League or would it simply help my chances at improving the other sections?

  1. Honestly, Sabrina doesn't know what she is talking about

Congrats on your 800 and do not bother with the Math section this time. Concentrate fully on the reasoning.

I did the same thing. My studying was completely focused on verbal the second time I took it. And during the actual exam, I took the math sections, but breezed through it casually and didnt get stressed out over it. I would finish maybe 5 minutes early and put my head down or keep my self calm by drawing or sketching. I ended up doing really well.

Colleges look at the highest scores. A 200 might be a little ridiculous to get. But take the math section, just don't stress yourself and study.

  2. That isn't a good idea. Even though colleges only consider your highest score, they would look on your 200 in math negatively. Focus your SAT Prep on critical reading and writing but at least attempt the Math Section. You wouldn't want it to hurt your chances getting into a great school.

  3. Retaking this test would do nothing but boost your chances of being accepted into your dream university. Because the test naturally displays your best combined score, there is virtually no reason not to attempt the test again. Accepting a lower score on the math section would still allow you to shine with your original 800 (congratulations), and possibly allow you to excell at Critical Reading and Writing sections.

I would, personally, go for it. Good Luck!
