  1. Absolutely!

  2. I would totally go to Pompeii I live in Naples. Pompeii is awesome you can also climb up to the top of the volcano too if you want. As for downtown naples there is not a lot down there a few castles but you cant go into any of them. Just an FYI. Sorrento is by Pompeii nice shoping and beaches.

  3. pompeii itself takes an entire day...you need to also figure out if the travel time spent getting there & back is worth it.  ostia is not as large or well preserved but it will give you an idea of how the old cities were laid out.  herculeum near pompeii is also very good, lot's of preservation, not as large as pompeii, doesn't take the entire day which leaves time to see other things.  pompeii is incredible, but personally there are so many other places to see closer to rome w/ less travel time i would choose one..the naples museum is important because it has many artifacts from the old city ruins.  also, i think stories about the crime in many cities are blown out of proportion by people who don't know how to look out for themselves.  i have travelled everywhere by myself &/or w/ kids etc never a problem...chicago, la, ny all have their share of crime also

  4. Pompeii is reallly something to see.  It's worth it.

I would also check out a cameo factory in Naples. I'm not sure what the name is.  It's been over 10 years since I've been.

I can tell you that out of all the cities I enjoyed Rome the least.  Florence and capri were the best.  I regretted I didn't stay other places longer.

    Have a  great trip!

  5. Hello I'm Italian!

Well you can go to Ostia but don't wait a paradaise, it's not, it's like a weekend seeside, there is a lot of people! You can go to Tarquina where are a lot of story museum or go to orbetello.

Well Italy is Beautiful and you can go where you want!

Think so that Pompei is nice but is far to Rome!

  6. Tivoli and Hadrian's villa is another good day trip from Rome -- is only about 45 minutes from Rome.  Pompeii is definitely worthwhile -- as far as Naples is concerned I don't think it is as bad as its reputation -- a good Friend of mine who goes to Italian every told me he really enjoyed his visit  and the food was great -- you do have to be careful and use common sense just like in any big city....

  8. Pompeii was definitely worth seeing. I still shudder to remember the ancient floor mosiac that read (in old Latin) "Beware of the Dog". Try to get a guide to show you around. I didn't think Naples was worth visiting, only because the crime is just so bad. Our driver wouldn't let us get out of the car in Naples because he didn't want us to get robbed. My sister's husband was surrounded by men threatening to rob him in Naples train station until the Police happened to arrive. Sorrento is beautiful, and so is the Isle of Capri. Florence is a beautiful day trip from Rome, and also a little less crime-ridden than Naples, although we did have a "tourist" join our group (complete with camera) while waiting to see David who was casing everyone to see who she could pick-pocket. Just be careful. I hope I haven't scared you. Italy is very worth seeing, and I'd go back in a heartbeat. Just be careful with your belongings and wear your money & passport inside your clothes. Have a great trip! There's so much beautiful art & history to see!!

  9. Yes!  Pompeii is incredible!  Its huge, but you dont have to see all of it.

When i went to Naples, i spent about 2 1/2 hours at Pompeii and hit the points of major interest.  Later, i took a ferry to Capri and saw the spectacular Blue Grotto.  Capri is one of the most beautiful islands you will ever see.  Its DEFINATELY worth seeing, even if you miss a day in Rome.

  10. Go to Pompeii.  It is very impressive.  Get the combined pass.  It is cheaper.  I wasn't too impressed with Naples.  I stayed around the train station.  Kinda seedy.  If you have time you can go to Isle of Capri from Naples.

  11. I have travelled to throughout Italy several times and I've been to Pompeii, Rome and Florence.  My answer is either go to Pompeii on that day outside of Rome or catch a train and go up to Florence for the day.  The train ride is about 2 hours each way but Florence, but you can catch an early train and be there by 10 a.m. and catch a late train and be back to Rome by 10 p.m.   Out of Florence and Pompeii, I'd say definitely FLORENCE!

  12. To be totally honest with you, no matter where you choose to go you won't lose out.  Every city has something unique and special about it.  Naples is a must see.  I don't remember much about Pompeii except the Ruins and the church there.
