  1. Answer # 1 offers some valid suggestions, but I have a home now with nothing, TORN UP in the strict sense, the delivery ducts are all in the floor. Obviously that equates to a house with a crawl space or basement.

My last home has all the delivery and return ducting in the attic, so that equates to just using the ceiling/ attic above.

The WORTH of the project certainly, will be in it's effectiveness and efficiency, and proper ducting from whatever form of heat source you have.

DIY obviously can be the savings in labor, if you've done enough research to do the job properly.

I'll give you an analogy that relates to your question. "One cannot win a Lottery, if one does not buy a ticket."

  2. I have installed ducts in homes with everything in the attic. All the homes in this area are like this, so I don't know about crawlspaces. Yes, it's a very doable DIY project. The hardest thing is balancing the rooms, unless you use in-line dampers.

  3. Sure, the labor itself is worth a try if you're ambitious.  I would have the system designed for you by professionals, for proper heat distribution, efficiency, locations, etc.  Working from a plan isn't too hard.  The labor is relatively straightforward; you will be tearing into your walls, and likely going through the floor.. Consider whether you're properly equipped for that type of work, and the cost of hiring assistance if needed.  I would get a few free estimates from contractors, if for nothing else, just to have a conversation with them about how the job would be done.
