  1. I think the military needs to address that one. Like any employee, NCO's need to be a little more discrete in their @$$ chewing sessions with each other. When a Sgt tears a pvt a new @$$, it's ok, b/c it's a learning curve. But NCO's need to take it behind doors. Officers need to do the same thing with NCO's.

  2. It depends on the seriousness and immediacy of the cause for the *** chewing, but I think in most cases NCO's should handle things behind closed doors.  My husband is an AF NCO and I know they handle things quietly when they can.  Like someone else said, the enlisted guys still need to have respect for the Sgt.

  3. It depends on the situation; if he did something stupid in front of his subordinates then it lets them know it is not the standard.  If it is something he did earlier and his subordinates didn't know about it then it is unnecessary and just shows that staff sergeant trying to show who's boss.

  4. It is ALWAYS a poor judghement call for a senior to castigate a subordinate in public. I was always taught "praise in public, reprimand in private". In the "old school" of military leadership, it was thought that public humiliation of senior members of the unit or division would "make an example" to junior personnel that even the senior NCO's in the unit weren't beyond reproach. In actuality, it only breeds contempt between the two senior members who should be presenting at least the appearance of a unified chain-of-command. In a combat unit, two senior NCO's quarrelling amongst each other could be just about the worst thing that could happen to that unit morale wise.

All this being said, it is important to remember that senior personnel are just as human as their junior subordinates. Even the best leaders make a mistake once in a while.

  5. well think of it this way. if you are superior than the others an you get seen getting your *** yelled off you arent gonna mess up a 2nd time

  6. It really depends. Usually, yes, but if the error was grave enough and enough people saw it then no.

  7. it depends on the situation, I have personally seen an 0-4 chew an E-8's *** in front of E-2's.  It was well deserved, and it set the precedence that he meant business to everyone in the room.

  8. Yes, normally you pull the NCO away from everyone and chew them out then. This way the lower enlisted don't look down on that NCO

  9. Yes, it should be handled in private, The lower ranks take this as a sign that their Sgt is also a goof up and may not take him seriously in the future.I believe the only exception would be a blatant diregard of a direct order. This would show to all that orders are to be obeyd at any cost. All other minor details should be handled in private.
