Is it wrong if a parent puts their child on punishment for months?

It depends what the punishment is and how remorseful the child is. My 13 year old failed a science test because she didn't feel like studying we grounded her for the school year. No tv, no phone and no going out with friends. She got driven to and from school. She was in bed by 7. She never failed another test.
