Question:

Is it wrong to end a game when you know you can't win?

I've started playing chess online. It got to a point where I did not have the skills to recover so I awarded my opponent the win. Playing games like Starcraft I don't like my opponent giving up when there is no chance of victory. Even if he walks away from his computer I still like to completely finish him off. I don't make an effort when I know I can't recover.

  1. To concede a game politely and with good sportsmanship when there is no possible way of winning is acceptable but to flip the board over and scatter the pieces is a show of bad character.  In chess it is very common to resign the game by tipping your king over and is considered by many to be a sign of respect towards your opponent.

  2. You could always agree beforehand that if the board game is hopeless, then resigning the game (as in Chess), is acceptable.  If it is a long board game, the other player will usually be willing to do this so another game can be started.  Once the win is certain the challenge is gone.

What you want to be careful of is simply using this as an excuse to quit because things aren't going your way.  If that were acceptable then no one would ever finish a game.  It requires discipline if you decide to all resignation so that you do not fall into that trap.  In heavily luck filled board games you can easily turn what looks like a failure into a win - use the resignation "rule" with care.

  3. No.

In chess it is polite to resign when you see you have no hope instead of making your opponent play to the bitter end.

  4. In chess it is perfectly acceptable to concede defeat.  I do not this is unreasonable in other games as well.

  5. it all depends if its a game you like or not   some games allow you to grant mercy

  6. Resignation in Chess is a valid technique.

Giving up in other games means you should have not started in the first place. Play to win or lose gracefully.

  7. Chess ....yes it's a really long game and when you've lost, you've lost but other games no...never give up never surrender. I mean seriously you never know when the tables are going to turn. But chess yeah i don't think anyone could blame you.

  8. I feel that it's more important to be a

good loser, than a good winner.

    Just my opinion.

It takes maturity to be a good loser,

and that same maturity helps us to

    win more often.

  9. its not wrong to end a game

  10. No. Resign the game if you know that the game is unwinable.
