Your anger at the government is nothing compared to the disrespect you are showing veterans in your area.  Veterans fought so that you could have more freedoms than most people in the world can only dream about.  Your way of saying "thank you for your service" is a slap in the face to "all who gave some, and some who gave all".  You should know that, since you say you are flying an American Legion flag, too.  By showing such disregard and lack of respect for the American flag, you are showing those veterans that you don't care about their service.  I am sure that you are getting dirty looks; you are lucky that is all you're getting.

It's perfectly legal, and I firmly believe it should remain perfectly legal. It's also incredibly disrespectful. Now, if you want to c**p on a picture of GW and fly that, I'll stand up and salute.

You should change your member name since it is a falsehood. You are "only" an American because you were born here. You are a communist in your way of thinking. Go to some other country where you wouldn't even be able to think about doing something like this. Actually, you could be arrested for "improperly displaying" the flag. Burning it is covered under free speech but not the way you are flying it. Better check your flag laws. It would probably not be a good idea to walk in front of windows after dark.

You'd probably do better with a flag that has the seal of the President of the United States on it, since the stars and stripes doesn't just represent our government, but the entire essence of who we are.

It is wrong and disrespectful.  If you have issues, you need to look for a better way to express your discontent.  If all you are getting is dirty looks, consider yourself lucky.  Most Americans have no respect for someone who has no respect for our flag.

If you're going to this much effort and having to explain every last detail, can't you find a better way.  I mean the ethics or flying an upside-down and dog-poo encrusted flag are okay I guess, freedom of speech and that.  But having to explain why for fifteen minutes makes it a bit pointless.

First, you would have to define what you mean by "wrong."  Some people would think defiling the American flag with dog excrement is "wrong" in the sense that it defiles the flag and is disrespectful to a symbol of our nation.  It is not "wrong" in the sense of being illegal since it is your first amendment right to fly the flag upside down or sidways or however you want. You could even put the Chinese communist flag above it as a political statement and it would not be illegal. I forget where the flag burning issue ended up, but that might be the only thing it is illegal to do with a flag - I forget.

The point is, you have a right to voice your discontent with your own country through using the flag as your own symbol of what you are trying to convey, and in that sense your use of the flag is not illegal, even though some may think you are wrong due to the disrespect it shows to our national symbol.  

Personally, I'm torn between your right to free speech and the pain it causes seeing the flag abused. But I'd rather allow the free speech than squelch it since that's what the symbol (flag) is all about.
