  1. There is no best martial art. They are all equal, even Tai Chi.

  2. I think the best Martial Arts is the one at which you can use and excel at.  I started training in Krav Maga when I was 14, during my years of Army service it was useful.

I have friends who were trained like I was and now they love and excel at Chinese Martial Arts.  This is where they found their light.

Now I teach Krav Maga and study Combat Sambo, which I really like.  I think you find what you like and you stick with it and you will be the best martial artist you can be.

I have friends who teach BJJ and totally ignore weapons, something we are big on in both Krav Maga and Combat SAMBO ( gun, knife, bat, bottle, etc), my friends don't teach much about weapons, they call me in to teach weapons disarmament, something I have experience with.

I guess the class, the teacher and the purpose for which you are learning martial arts all come into play.  I prefer combat arts, as I learned and used a combat art for survival and it is fun training.

What you call the best depends on what you want to get out of the system you are studying.  I know some great grapplers, I would hate to face on a mat, would I want them in an armed combat scenario, well maybe not.

For you the best martial art is one you enjoy, will practice diligently and do your best in.

  3. there is no "best" many have pros and cons

the bottom line is martial arts have pros and cons

take karate - many styles and many branches have broken off it

  4. Definately useful, but not the best.

  5. Probably the best or one of the best at learning how to fight on the ground, but you still want to have some striking skills, especially for street fighting.

I can give you two recent examples in the street where I definately would prefer to use striking skills over ground skills.

About a week ago I was walking with a friend of mine (a very peaceful Indian guy, practically like Ghandi) when two homeless people approached us, they wanted to use his cell phone.  Of course he said no, but then they got aggressive and one went into a fight position.  Now these guys looked and smelled like they hadn't showered in over a month and if came down to it, I definately wouldn't want to fight on the ground with them, not to mention it would be two on one since Ghandi would have been useless in a fight.  I was actually thinking low side kick to the knee to take one out quickly.  Fortunately my friend, Ghandi, was able to peacfully talk the home less guys out of a confrontation.

The second incident happened just today at lunch time at a deli.  One guy of normal size accidentally bumped into a very large, actually obese man, maybe 400lbs.  The larger man got pissed off and I thought there would be a fight.  Again, in no way did I want to roll around on the ground with this 400lb man.  Again the situation was resolved peacefully.

On the flip side fights in the street often go to the ground whether you like it or not, so it is a good idea to learn something about ground fighting.  I might also add that BJJ is alot of fun.

Of course the overall moral of this story is avoid the fight altogether.

  6. I agree with Mito. It is good to have a combination of good stand up and a ground game. In my opinion, Muy Thai and Jiu-Jitsu address the important concepts of self defense. Boxing helps too.

If you had to pick one, I would choose Jiu-Jitsu because women especially have to be able to get out of a dominated position. If a woman is attacked, the person will probably take them to the ground. Jiu-Jitsu can teach you to wait for the opportunity to escape.

  7. depends who you ask.

  8. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is by far the best.

Look at what Royce Gracie did in the UFC.

He beat every form of martial art without even throwing a punch.

  9. no a bad system to understand your opponents' joints, but still on the ground, ju jitsu need to take into account eye gouging and biting. Groin grabbing. Not easy to avoid those dirty street survival techniques when you are so close to your opponents.

  10. Yep. I prefer tai chi jiu jitsu
