  1. In broad terms, yes.

Red and Blue are both blends, meaning they use a variety of single malts (JW mentions all sorts of numbers for Blue, Red probably has far fewer) and neutral grain spirits.

Red is blended with low price as a guideline. Less expensive (younger and more common) malts go into the mix and it's fine tuned by a master distiller so that each batch tastes the same as the previous.

Blue is blended with a high price limit, which opens up a larger number of stock barrels for use. Diageo owns dozens of distilleries and thousands of old barrels, so a blender has a lot of ingredients to make a new batch of Blue. JW says there are 50 YO whiskies in the mix.

  2. not sure exactly how its made, but definately the curing process and time make a major difference. you can tell the difference from johnny blue (real smooth) vs.johnny black vs. johnny red ..always try to drink the better quality whiskey...you'll have less of a chance of hangover with the better whiskey- when drinking johnny whiskey...always drink black or blue..the red is bad quality.
