  1. Are you asking about k12.com?  TXVA is a charter school run by k12, Inc. and is indeed free and available in the DFW and Houston areas for grades 3-8 (2007-2008 school year).

It is not a true homeschooling programs (parent-directed learning).  Students enrolled in these programs are still considered public school students, even though they do not attend the local brick and mortar school.

If you're asking if a Texas homeschool student in grades k-12 has to have the approval of the BofE, then the answer is no.  You (as the parent) simply need to withdraw the child from the local public school (*IF* s/he is currently enrolled).  If the child is not enrolled and never has been, no notice is necessary.

  2. K12 is incredible!!!  We're in our fifth year of using it.  We don't use it through a virtual public school, though, we purchase it ourselves to use the curriculum, just like someone would purchase Sonlight or Abeka or Calvert to use on their own.

TXVA is not a statewide school - yet.  So unless your child is in the grade they are accepting (now or next year) and you live in a district that is in it, you'll be out of luck until it's opened (if it is) to a larger market.  Other school districts might jump on the bandwagon, though.  That's what happened in KS, that has three K12 virtual schools.  One opened, had great sucess, then another and another.

I would spend some time on the K12 site looking at the sample lessons and scope and sequence.  You'll be amazed at the depth and breadth of the courses.  Plus, the planning and progress tools are one K12's best features, IMO.  They remove so much of the prep work of HS'ing, which I have no desire to do.  Others love it and want to do it and it works well for them.  I have too much on my plate to worry about the plan and prepping for it.

Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.  There are many K12 groups, including a TX group, on Yahoo Groups.

  3. I think so, but I don't recommend it, unless you are very studious. It is a fairly gruelling program. If you are unsure, i would check out daily schedules and things like that to help you! :) Good luck!

  4. K12 offers the Texas Virtual Academy, you can check it out here: http://www.txva.org/

I haven't personally used it, but have heard good things from those who have.

  5. The K12 virtual academies are public schools, so it would have to be approved by the board of education.  It is a free program and they have a great curriculum.  It is challenging, but isn't that what we want for our kids?  We are with Ohio Virtual Academy and have found the teacher support to be excellent.  I think it would be a wise choice for you.
