Any  martial arts can be a  way of life more then a sport  kung fu is  7000 years old... and is very disciplined in mind body and  soul

What do you want it to be ?

Sporting competition?It can be that.

Self defnse?It can be that but avoid schools that push sport competition but have hard sparring with various degrees of contact depending on your level and time in.

Both of the above?It can be that also but one or the other usually suffers due to neglect or emphasis.

A way of life discipline self improvement ?Yes it can be those thing too.Just avoid the ego tripping aspects a lot of sport orientated schools are prone to or places that offer to teach "secrets" no one else knows.

Or it can be just another way to get in good physical condition.

It's different things to different people.

To some it is a sport,

some want it purely as self defense.  

To others of us it is a way of life and encompasses everything that we do.

Karate (open hand) is a lifestyle. a martial art that envelopes your life. it has been turned into a sport, but is mainly a way of focsing your mind and body into a physical presence.

karate can be classified as a sport. it can be represented as many different ways such as martial arts, a style of fighting, a means of controlling and also working out your body, and can also be a sport. it may on the other hand not be a sport, and instead just be a form of art, as you don't see people playing karate competitively in games lyk the olympics, but karate skills can come in handy for several of the games. i guess it's just lyk saying that chess is a sport. bloody asians.
