Is kayaking at Lake Powell safe?

I want to go to Lake Powell and I'm not a boat guy (don't have one, don't know how to work one), but I still want to do something in the lake, otherwise, what's the point, right? While searching lakepowell.com, I found out that they have kayaks for rent. I've never been to Lake Powell, but for what I can see in the pictures, it looks deep and scary. Is there any real danger for a newbie to go kayaking at Lake Powell?

go on a calm day ..a lot of places give lessons.

Contact a local boat shop.

I spent the day geocaching in a canoe.

Never been out there, but the pictures look awesome. Having said that, a great resource for info on where to Kayak is http://www.paddling.net .They have a section on their home page called places2paddle which is organized by state and then lists the lakes, rivers, oceans, etc. that have been reviewed by users. There are two reviews for Lake Powell (under the Utah listing). Both rate the Lake as Moderate for difficulty.
