Is krav maga a legitimate way to learn self defence for the real world?

Because Krav Maga is a military combatives fighting system and a rather effective one, you won't find many other styles or systems that can teach you to fight better than Krav Maga. Krav Maga is comparable to British, American, and Russian combative fighting systems. It is a practical, brutal self defense system.

seems to be as its in vogue at the moment but I'd also check out ,wing chun,jiu-jitsu,Aikido and Boxing :)***

Yes.  Krav Maga is so effective that most of MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) is based on some, just some not all, of Krav Maga.  You'll learn what most of us will need to know about real world fighting.  What's great about Krav Maga is that the training isn't divided into professional security and civilian.  Everyone receives the same training at each level.
