My first language is English followed by Spanish. Well anyways, i'll be going to france this summer and i'd like to learn a bit of the language before i go. Is it a hard language to learn in 11 months. I'd hate to go and not even be able to say thank you :$

  1. Learning French itself probably won't be too tricky because of the similarities with Spanish. Using it...depends. My first year French teacher took Spanish in college and struggled because she kept completing her assignments in a mix of the two languages. Overall, it should go well, especially with your experience with learning another language! Bonne chance et à plus!

  2. With skills in Spanish, you will have an easier time than most learning French.  However, don't get over confident, French can be much more difficult than Spanish.  If you apply yourself, there should be no problem learning the basic phrases to get around a bit.  Look into your local colleges, community centers, etc.  Sometimes they offer language courses for travelers, which would be much more helpful than French 101.  Keep your expectations for yourself realistic, however, don't be disappointed if you find that you can read French much easier than you can speak or comprehend the spoken word.

  3. In the library, bookstore look at the travel phrasebooks with cds. Those phrasebooks are easy to learn.

    Try googling "French phrases".

French and Spanish are close in vocabulary: a Mexican looked at my French textbook and was amazed that he could understand it. But, Spanish speakers cannot understand spoken French. The French genius invented a pronunciation far different from other Romance languages and I'm thankful.

  4. If you know spanish then french will be easy

Both of the languages are like almost the same

    :D

  5. Thank you= Merci.  Don't learn French unless you have to.  Many Americans have hurt themselves trying to speak French.

  6. Oui...

Actually, it depends on if you have a head for learning new languages. I struggled with both French and German. If you've already mastered Spanish, however, another language may not be too hard for you.

I learned French 29 years ago and all I remember of it is how to introduce myself and how to count to 20.

I don't think French is any harder than any other language to learn though.

  7. As you already know Spanish, French won't be too harsh on you. However, it's a bit of a tricky language to learn because it doesn't sounds like it is written, all the time...French is always illogical but so poetic at the same time. Don't worry, after the 2 first languages, the others come quite fast! Amusez-vous bien en français!

  8. It won't be hard for you since you know English and Spanish , It is very similar to Spanish but have tons of vocabularies in common with English. The hardest thing is that what's written is something and what's said is another ( words sound different from their spelling )
