  1. bass is easier but i would learn guitar first and then bass will be so simple to learn its not even funny since they are really close

  2. Bass is easy at the begining but as you progress gets very hard and very fast. Guitar is the same. Also bassists are in short supply and they are very important. Hey you can learn both if you want they are very similar. Start with the guitar and then move onto the bass. Have fun.

  3. Bass is easier.  Same reasons stated by Acoustical Chaos.  Bass lines are usually a single series of notes rather than all the chords that guitar parts often have.

  4. bass is easier because your only playing 4 strings instead of 6.usually one string at a time instead of chords.

  5. All instruments are difficult to master.   Don't let "only four strings" fool you.  The bass requires the same amount of music theory knowledge as a guitar (scales, chords, inversions, progressions, etc.).

    Two things to note:

    1. The bass is a support instrument.   Thus, you never see someone on a sidewalk playing a tune on a bass.

    2. The neck on a bass is longer than a guitar.  So you basically need a big hand or long fingers to play a bass well.

However, if you really dig the bass, then go for it.   If you're looking for something easy to learn - then I would not choose this over a guitar.
