Hey, i just got two new male gerbils. I know that they chew plastic, but I was wondering if lego would be ok for them. They already have a little house but I was planning on building a tunnel system.

  1. I dont think you should use legos.  They will eat the plastic and it could and prob. would kill them.  You can use things like oatmeal containers they are cardboard.  No plastic.

  2. Plastic is plastic. They will chew it and it could be fatal. You can use cardboard rolls from toilet paper, paper towels and such, to make a tunnel system. They'll destroy everything eventually, but as long as they have fun and you can replace the spent rolls, they'll be kept busy.

  3. i dont think so..but im not to sure.. i think you would have to go to a pet store and by some rodent toys there pretty cheap as long as you go to the right pet store!!

    hope this helps!!:D

  4. Well, thats not a good idea, but hey, what do I know?

Try it, and see if they chew it, and if they do, take it out ASAP, if they dont, keep an eye out on it, and make sure they dont, otherwise you can use it.

I had gerbils a long time ago, and they chewed EVERYTHING.

Now I have hamsters instead. :P

    Have fun with your gerbils!

  5. It probably isn't a good idea to expose them to that type of plastic, but if you're okay with putting their lives in danger, go ahead. =/

My gerbils usually know what can and cannot be chewed and they'll avoid bad plastics, but you never know.  I'd try to invest in the tunnels they sell at pet stores even though they're expensive, at least they're definitely safe.  Cardboard tubes work well too, but not for out of cage play... obviously they'll chew their way out and escape.

If you want to give them exercise and that's why you're going through the trouble to build the lego tunnels, I bought one of the metal, colourful playpens from a pet store and let mine run around in it with random toys and such.  Good luck! =]

  6. Maybe it's not the best thing if they actually swallow it. If they just nibble on it and let it go I suppose it's ok.
