  1. Alot of regeneration is going into Lewisham at the moment. It has DLR links to canary wharf and  central london (cannon street and charing cross) are only 15m by overland train.  The centre is going to be redeveloped shortly -so there will be a bit of a building site - but that will all be to the good. Also don't forget you have Blackheath and Greenwich, two green oases, very close by.  The safety thing is overdone - but it depends who you are. If you are young and hang out in clubs and pubs alot, or get involved in the drug culture, then it is not a good place to be.  If you have children, the state schools aren't great.  But if you are a young/ish professional you';ll find it invigorating and nowhere near as bad as its painted.

  2. I wouldn't say it's the safest of places, no.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want to raise a family there, I'd say no, and if you're looking for safety, cleanliness, and nice housing, then I'd go for somewhere else.

However, if you're happy to live anywhere, want to experience a different aspect of life, and want to become part of a more multi-cultural society, then it's your call.
