Is liability insurance available on international auto rentals?

we are renting vehicle in palermo in oct 2008 and are concerned because the policies we have looked at do not include liability

  1. To be licensed, the car generally has some insurance on it.  To cover yourself, check with A) Your Credit Card Company.  If you pay with a Gold (or better) Visa/MasterCard/AmEx you may be covered. B) You may take the (ripoff) rental company CDW and Personal Injury Insurance C) Your own insuance company may offer coverage on cars you rent for an additional premium.

  3. You should be able to purchase liability and comprehensive & collision (or whatever physical damage is called in Italy) from the rental car agency.  Other than that I do not know of any other place to buy it.  You will not find it from anyone that I am aware of in the US.
