Question:

Is life important?

Read this quote;

"In an infinite universe the one thing sentient life cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion."

So, imagine this;

Person1 says, "Hi, I need someone to talk to, my father just died...". Person 2 gives her a hug then says "Listen, the universe is infinite and life is too big to worry about things. Your father was just a tiny spec within a tiny spec in this thing, and so are you, so am I."

Basically: Nothing matters? Or, when does something start to matter? When should something matter, in this infinite universe?

  1. It is important to those experiencing it.

  2. I think you may be confusing the size of the universe with the size of a person. I don't understand the point of that.

    Size does not determine importance.

    If you want to play that game look at how small a cell is, or the molecules that make up that cell, or the atom that make up the molecules. We are giants on that scale.

    Life is unique and truly amazing and extremely important.

    The meaning of life is to live it.

  3. Self preservation appears to be a universal value that doesn't need to become important. It is intrinsically important to all forms of life, not just those that can reflect on the subject. Even the black holes, formation of galaxies, destruction of galaxies, etc. All forms of matter and life appear to be in a struggle to survive in the form they currently exist. Nevertheless, love has been shown to supercede this universal drive for self preservation. The "thing" that matters above all else is love. If you have it, life has meaning. Without it, nothing else has much lasting value.

  4. the universe is NOt infinite..it is finite

    what matters is what matters to YOU..doesnt matter if it doesn't matter to anyone else...

    what you place importance on need not be universal to have value.

  5. As Important as you want it to be.

  6. Yes it is important to each person individually.It is he himself who makes out what he thinks is good.Others are mere onlookers and even you are an onlooker to others.It matters to the person involved.

  7. Yes life is important and each person does matter.   Each person's life, each life form, in fact represents a world, a unique way in which the universe experiences itself.  And when your form dissolves, a world comes to an end, one of countless worlds. There is an even deeper level to the whole than the interconnectedness of everything in existence.  At that deeper level, all things are one.  It is the source, it is the timeless intelligence that manifests as a universe unfolding in time.   You become part of the purpose, "acausal connecting principle", no casual connection between events on our surface level of reality, underlying intelligence behind the world of appearances and a deeper connectedness that our mind can not always understand.

  8. Yes & No.

  9. Hello,

    (ANS) YES! The universe is totally unlimited & has no known boundaries and YES! that's so mind boggling I would like to suggest that its also just totally inconceivable to most ordinary human beings. We are unable to really and truly grasp how BIG space & time really are. The universe remains beyond human imagination & it is a total mystery, and god & religion cannot explain it either.

    **If we REALLY could see how small we are, so totally tiny in the overall scheme of the universe I think we would all be totally terrified even possibly traumatized by that. Human beings cannot cope with facing such purity of truth, we cannot tolerate much reality and this is why human beings needed to invent God & Religion. God & Religion are nothing more than comfort blankets against the existential reality of what we are. And that we have a limited time span within the weird reality we call life.

    **YES! Life is important !! but importance is relative to us as individuals.

    **One persons importance is another persons irrelevance!!

    **Importance is a "human construct", humans need concepts to explain value or what is precious to themselves. Importance is a relative term in & of itself in my opinion.

    Ivan.

  10. people have pondered this question for thousands of years. I'll tell you something that will spare you their agony at not finding an answer: think of the universe as YOUR life, think of the world as it concerns you, how it affects you and how you react to it, then the world will be so much smaller and what's important to you will seem like a huge thing, which it is. The universe is created in a way that everyone feels it revolves around them, and in a sudden moment they realize it doesnt and they panic. Take my adivce: read the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, even though it's silly, it truly does have some very important things to say. And hey, just because someone is a tiny speck in the world- it means nothing- a virus or bacteria is a tiny speck but it can cause a pandemic if it wants. Basically; if something matters to you it matters in the universe because small as we humans are our lives are an intricate yet integral part of it.

  11. This is the problem we face in this post-modern world, and the best answer I can find is within existentialism.

    The most fundamental idea behind existentialism is that existence precedes essence, in other words, our life and its meaning is nothing more than that which we choose to make it.

    It is a very subjective philosophy that denies absolute truth.

    Your truth is yours to define.  This can cause despair and seem overwhelming, but your only two choices are either to withdraw in the face of this struggle, or to embrace it and overcome it.

    To answer you questions:

    Nothing intrinsically matters.    It begins to matter when someone places value on it.  There is no reason something should matter any more than it should not matter.    Does Yahoo! answers enrich your life?  If so, then it matters to you, and it started mattering to you when you began to use it and it enriched your life.  If it does not enrich your life, then why make the choice to waste any more time on here?

  12. This can be seen as true. But apparently, the human race has decided there is more. We are attached to each other and have our rituals. For whatever reason, you can decide, humans have known this yet resisted.
