Limewire, the program itself, is safe. However, whatever you download (songs, videos, etc.) can sometimes be malicious and coded with viruses, trojan horses, worms, and other phishing stealth malware that will devour your computer.

Unless you have recommendable antivirus software and your firewall is turned on, I would not use LimeWire.

You always get such mixture of asnwers to this question, because it depends highly on your own abilities. First, understand that it is a file sharing service where you take files off other people's hard drives all over the world. Also understand the the majority of computer users shouldn't be allowed to have computers. You could probably name a file "Virus-inside" and someone will still download it.

The bottom line is that if you know what you're looking for and you only download media files (not executables or zip archives), you will be very happy and safe. Also make sure you have a running and up-to-date anti-virus and you'll be doubly safe.

Now for the 2nd question. Is it legal? The software certainly is. What's  illegal is the copying and sharing of copyrighted music. So enjoy it and use it wisely and carefully.

And it is legal, if you download music or anything using limewire you are committing a  federal crime for infringing copyrighted material. It can be punishable by 5+ years in prison.

it is not safe as it is a good place for viruses to lurk.  The service is legal, the content may not be.  Use newsgroups, easynews.com is a good beginners choice.

it is not that safe because you could have trojanhorse virus from it but if you have norton antivirus then have a limewire. it is legal if you use it on ur own, it is illegal to use it for the public.
