  1. Anhydrous ammonia, in liquid form, is used extensively to add nitrogen to the soil. When it reacts with water, it can dramatically increase plant growth and production in many types of crops if used in proper amounts and at the proper time.  It is generally added prior to planting, or as a "side dressing" during the growth cycle of the crop.

  2. basically yes,it is.

  3. In general, yes, if properly used.

    From Wikipedia

"In addition to serving as a fertilizer ingredient, ammonia can also be used directly as a fertilizer by forming a solution with irrigation water, without additional chemical processing. This later use allows the continuous growing of nitrogen dependent crops such as maize (corn) without crop rotation but this type of use leads to poor soil health."

The other most common commercial fertilizer is ammonium nitrate which, if overused, can result in accumulation of nitrates in groundwater.

  4. The use of any chemical, pure or otherwise, requires a level of knowledge to keep the user safe, keep the plants from dieing, and keeping food from becoming toxic.

Ammonium is the "positive" side of a molecule, the NH4+ side and will be attached to a hydroxide, or nitrate, or chloride.

Ammonia, NH3, and water makes ammonium hydroxide, a common cleaning agent of varied strength. You have to know how strong it is to use it  and it only provides nitrogen, none of the other macros or the dozen micros. It is a chemical, and by that right alone is a poor choice of fertilizer.

The anhydrous ammonia gas is something not to be messed with unless you are trained and equipped, it will kill you dead in a very nasty way. Was great in trench warfare.
