  1. Don't let it bother you too much, I once was asked from where I am and when I said South africa the asker wanted to know if it is near the Sahara desert......

  2. Unfortunately Alf is right.

  3. They are not educated on Africa, only on America and the West side of the world. (Britain etc)

  4. I've been told that I can't be South African because I'm blonde and white.

Unfortunately our so called "tourist" board hasn't done much in way of advertising SA. And when they do, it's about the beautiful animals and nature reserves we have. And the sad truth is that South Africa advertisies itself as a black country as well.

People are still very much stuck on that the country is inhabited only by animals. Granted, some of it is true, but there are some human beings inbetween.

  5. Coz americans arent too smart and dont know too much about the rest of the world...40% of american children cant even find america on the map...so dont worry bout the ignorance...

  6. LOL BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA!!THATS WHAT THEY SHOW US AMERICANS AND MANY DONT TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF THE US TO SEE IF THEY ARE TELLING THE TRUTH!

  7. Sorry for your experience, but ignorant people are a fact of life, sad but true.

  8. Yeah, i think its just that on most Tv series or movies They Portray South Africa or Africa as a place with jungles and wild animals with no technology at all even though we live in a city environment (well where i live its a city environment)

  9. During the Korean War, 2 Sqn SAAF went to join in, and when the ship carrying them arrived in port, they were greeted by a USAF band composed only of black airmen. The Americans had failed to understand that the South Africans in question were all white.

    They are still pretty thick.

(Bit out of character there - sorry!)

  10. A lot of people outside South Africa think that we life in 'dark Africa'.  With Lions and elephants walking in our streets (well this is if we had any streets ;-) )  and only black people living here - giving that the only clothes they have are made from animal skin.

When my daughter was an exchange student in Germany 3 years ago, she was ask if she go to school on a elephant's back....

They are much more surprised to find out that there are white people living in SA as well.

  11. The vast majority of Americans are utterly ignorant and know nothing of the world.

  12. No, its just very common to know that in the USA some people dont know much knowledge about the world, they are just brainwashed by their goverment. Like crossing a state is a big deal to them. Not all of them are like, like the ones that travel and have more open minds

But yes south africa is far away, but if you tell them about Nelson Mandela, they know exactly who you are talking about, and if you mention the World Cup Soccer that too should ring a bell, be great because it will show the whole world where and what is south africa when they have the world cup.

  13. Shame, don't they have or watch television
