Question:

Is lobelia poisonous?

I bought a "hardy" lobelia from a flower market and now wonder if its poisonous (it is a tall plant and produces red flowers. I also have one with purple flowers). I just planted it today and my rabbit ate a leaf. Shall I remove it from the ground or leave it as I read on a website all parts are poisonous and I'm worried about the effect it could have on the children and animals if it is. Then again I'm new to gardening and could be over reacting. Any advice from experienced gardeners would be great thanks.

  2. what happened to the bunny?

  3. no is not , not to worry, it could make him a little sleepy coz is supposes to calm the nerves this plant and it could make him a little diarrhea, but not kill him at all

  4. first, that really doesn't fit the discription of a lobelia which is a small ground cover plant and secondly, animals have a great sense of what they can eat. Tip; keep that bunny out of your garden...to him/her that stuff is food

  5. It can be toxic in rather large amounts.  One leaf shouldn't kill your rabbit.

Lobelia has been used for a long time in herbal medicines.
