Question:

Is loud music bad for pet rats?

Hey everyone,

My son has some pet mice, he also uses his room (the same room the rats are in) for his band practice. Is this bad for them? They apparently don't seem to mind but I just want to make sure before I find a dead rat!

Thanks,

Chistina.

  1. ITS VERY BAD, RATS LOOSE THERE HEARING I THINK, BUT IN MY OPINION ITS VERY BAD!

rats are noctunal so they will sleep during the day so dont play load music keep them in a dark place with the door closed so they can sleep in peice.

    :o)

  2. It's not too bad for them, unlike with hamsters and animals like that, but it is a bad idea to have continous loud noise around them.

They are not nocturnal like the other person said, but she is right in saying they could lose their hearing and if they're particularly stressy rats, they could get breathing problems from being stressed a lot.

But take them out of the room if possible. I take my gerbils out of the room when I vaccum, so it should be the same with rats.

  3. yes this will probably terrify them and make them jump out of their skin

move the rats out before he does his band practice

  4. well it probably wont harm them physically but rats have exceptionally good hearing and loud music would I would think be wayyy too loud. I have rats and they dont like loud noises. I wouldn't recommend it. They may not "mind" it but it could stress them which could make it more likely for them to get illnesses and get sick. I would recommend he move them during band practice, it's not that hard to move cages for a an hour or two.

To clarify things-rats are naturally noctural but adjust to the runnings of a human household thus come out and see us during the day because that's when we are awake. My rats are active most in the early evening when I take them out, I hear them eating and rumbling around their cage until about 2am and then they are asleep until about midday.

  5. Oooh... that is not very pleasant. Would you want to live in a room with a band playing every one or two days? More or less all the time! Rats don't really like loud music, and it can give him/her hearing problems in the future. It is certainly not going to kill the poor thing though. I would move them where they have peace and quiet, for they can be comfortable...
