  1. Maybe, however, Melatonin 3mg is more effective.

  2. it's very mild. If you drink it warm, it's more the warmth that relaxes you

  3. Magnesium helps your body function better in general.  If you really need help sleeping try valerian root.  I go right to sleep with it (if I want to have iced tea for dinner with full caffeine).

  4. Magnesium citrate in liquid form is an effective muscle relaxer. If neck tension, sore muscles or heart palpitations are keeping you awake, magnesium helps.

Magnesium is essential for use of some of the B vitamins, a deficiency of which affects the nervous system. It can help w/PMS and anxiety. Women on estrogen supplements (the pill) are likely to be deficient in magnesium. Absorption is also blocked by a high milk or high fat diet. So supplementation can have some positive long-term effects, even to helping prevent heart attack.

If your sleeplessness is caused by a high-stress job, over-consumption of caffeine, napping during the day or too much excitement late in the day, then other herbs and supplements and techniques may be more effective for relief.

  5. For me melatonin is the way to go. The prescription drug Rozeram is a melatonin like drug that cost $4 each.

  6. Magnesium does act as a bit of a relaxant... but it will relax your bowels more than your brain in higher doses. If your friend takes it to help them fall asleep, then they would fall asleep almost as fast without it... unless the act of taking the pill triggers the idea of sleep in their mind (and in that case, if it works for them, they should stick with it).

If you're looking for something natural to help you sleep, though, there are several options available. There's Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomile, Hops, L-Tryptophan, L-Theanine, Passionflower, and Scullcap (an herb).

You can try any one of those to help you sleep naturally.
