  8. Answers have given the present picture. However I trace here historical development that was not covered by others.

Whole of Malaysia (127,000sq. miles) was ruled by British and perhaps, is the reason for country's unity. Peninsula of Malaya (50,000 sq. miles). At that time Singapore was part of the territory and  got independence (August 31, 1957) together. Later by mutual consent Singapore got seperated. North Borneo was divided into Sarawak, Brunei & Northern Borneo (Sabah). Except Brunei that was a British protected kingdom the other two joined Malaya and the whole country renamed 'Malaysia'. Brunei remains an independent kingdom. There was an unpleasant sequal later. Indonesia who was the heir to the Dutch East Indies and who has 3/4th of Borneo, laid claim to these parts of Borneo as part of indonesia and embarked upon a campaign 'Crush Malaysia'. Tension finally eased and hostilities put to rest after Indonesia unilaterally gave it up.
