is martial arts like karate , taekwondo, muay thai, kick boxing etc... usefull in a street fight or is it jus to build up the mental and physical morale and fitness ?? i know it can be applied for lethal effects but speaking practically is it viable to do so for a person whos not training for decades and whos not a sensei.... if it can be applied practically, then which art form is more effective for a quick knockout?

  1. Yes... like anything practiced properly you get better at it... gives you different advantages than an untrained individual...

  2. Well martial arts has being taught popularly in the military so I wonder why the military considers it as been effective in a life or death situation if it doesn't work in a simple street fight.

  3. I would say yes and no it totally depends on what martial art you are using

In most cases i think a martial artist would win... My school offers freestyle fighting and other styles that dont really ( play by the rules )

And to top it off a martial artist has a counter for just about everything... My cousin's bf has been doing martial arts since age 6 and only lost 1 street fight in his whole life.

Muay Thai would probably be good street fight wtyle cause there is alot of punching

  4. Styles like kickboxing, taekwondo, etc, are good for being dynamic and for throwing lots of strikes at an opponent in a short space of time.

The stances in karate are a lot deeper and the moves are more powerful and concentrated generally, so it is possible to knock someone out in one blow with karate (if you're really good, of course).

Realistically though, try not to get into street fights in the first place. Martial arts only give you an edge, they don't turn you into Superman. If you're up against a gang of 20, you'll never take them all, no matter how many black belts you have.

  5. NO!!! dont bother with martial arts in a street fight!! youll get your @$$ kicked and look stupid doing it

  6. martial arts is really helpful in a street fight......its keeps u prepared for such situations !!!!

  7. A friend who recently passed away was a skilled martial artist ,( who  I believe could demolish a building, bare handed ). always said "his main advantage  would be having  the mental discipline to avoid  a violent confrontation & that running shoes were the best defense".

Figure if a guy like that would walk away from a fight, anyone who was not expertly trained would not have to worry about a quick knockout except for  his own.

  8. bruce lee's jeet kune do is effective in the streets also the phillipino martial arts are useful and krav maga, there are others, but it's good to be well versed in the one you train in or take  classes in others, so you can be effective in battle.

  9. Thats just an professional fight... When it comes do fight on street, you just want to hurt the other... In professional fights like karate, judo, TK, boxing, it is taught who will attack how and how to defense...

  10. it depends upon the martial art your talking, there are few considered arts that are deadly and can be used in streets like say stick fighting(Kali), stick is very common on streets and its not illegal to carry one

  11. YA .it is useful in street fight, any style u learn all r  having street fight techniques.

all form r having some change techniques .i am learning SHITO-RIYU (it is really very effective)so i recommend u to learn this art.

  12. Yes!

If you pay attention to your instructor (all of my instructors anyway,) you will attempt to run away from a street fight!

  13. Of course it is.  That's why it's taught to various military and security people around the world.

Do you think a street fighter could beat a professional fighter just because there are no rules?

Person A is a street thug.  He's a bully and bad guy that beats people up for fun.  He doesnt play any sports, he has never trained, but he's been beaten up, and now beats people up.

Person B has never fought outside of the gym/dojo.  But he has been training 4 days a week in the gym.  He is physically fit, he has drilled in sparring and self defense over and over for a year.

Person C has never fought, and never trained.  Just an average Joe.

Person A attacks Person B.  Is it possible that person A wins?  Sure, it's possible, but person B has trained for this moment, person A is not used to encountering a resisting opponent that knows some moves.

Person A attacks Person C, it's an easy win, Person C is just another victim.

The point is, that someone who trains is far better prepared than someone who has never trained.  Martial Arts training won't guarantee success, but you are certainly far better off than someone who has never trained.

  14. Overall, the logic of this question is twisted.

Let's ASSUME for a second that martial arts is no good for street fighting -- does this mean you will have a better chance at winning a street fight if you DONT train? No.

Keep in mind a "no rules" fight means exactly that, no rules. Martial artists can bite, eye gouge, groin kick, smash beer bottles and bar stools just as well as your average joe, if not better.

To truly understand the effectiveness of martial arts in a street fight, you have to exam how the student trained - if martial artist trained REALISTICALLY for years, then I would say the attacker picked the wrong victim assuming the attack was not well-planned and premeditated.

Overall, it all depends on how you train, how dedicated and well disciplined you are. It depends on how you interpret the movements under high adrenaline situations.

  15. It depends on the art.  Many ancient arts were designed to protect the village from bandits. Exp: kung-fu.  Did You see Crouching Tiger?  It was about someone who stole the villages secret art.

Sport martial arts meant for the ring.

  16. No street fighting is different no rules apply.

  17. Knowledge of martial arts is an asset for self defence.

These technics are not meant to enter into street fights.

Neither they are meant to dominate the weak over the strong.

It is an ancient culture for protection in case of oppression/invasion.

The art needs to be practiced constantly and the person concerned needs to be finely tuned, ever alert, defensive, with clear sense of judging the opponent. It is said admire your adversery, appreciate the strenghts, access the weaknesses and you are bound to be the victor.

  18. it depends on what your being taught, your teacher, and how well you learn and train

  19. For a street fight i would recommend studying krav maga, you can do Maui-tai, for strikes, but to get the best results, knowing how to defend against knives, guns, sticks, makeshift weapons, multiple opponents, learn krav maga,

This is not MMA, MMA, Is a game, its not self defense, its just popular so people think this, dint be bought in, Krava maga is very intense, no nonsense, but very affective

  20. no, muay thai probably yes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, of course.

most people know how to fight standing  up so when you take them to the ground they don't usually know what to do.

this is what jiu jitsu focuses on, ground fighting. BJJ is one of the only martial arts that is truly effective in a real world street fight.

Just look at most UFC fighters, the core of their fighting style is BJJ. I know those guys can kick almost anybodies ***.

  21. Kenpo is great for self-defense. Many consider it "over-kill".  Ex. Some techniques will be a response to a single-handed push, and result in the opponent having a broken limb, black eye, broken nose, and being knocked out.

For quick, immediately accessible self defense:  Krav Maga,  Kickboxing/Muay Thai/ JKD,  and BJJ.

Karate and Tae Kwon Do take a long time to learn but result in very powerful use of techniques when you get there.  Plus, with Karate you have something that will last you a lifetime.  Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of shotokan, practiced until his death in his 90's  and successfully defended himself from an armed mugger when he was  70.  For full contact sports, you have to retire at a fairly young age.

  22. no martial arts are completely ineffective in street fights. you should just swing wildly and hope you land if you ever get into a fight.  that will work way better.

  23. LOL  no if ur gonna use martrial arts u better be as fast a bruce lee and u gotta willing to break there bones and use deadly strikes with out any thought

  24. ye an elbow to the face will knock him out***

  25. Yes. I agree with Anti Thesis and Jamesf24. I could totally own myself in a street fight if I didn't know martial arts.
