Question:

Is medicade considered group or individual health insurance?

I am pregnant and was enrolled in Medicade. Late in 2007, I started a new job, and now I am not qualified to remain in Medicade because of my increased income. I have obtained an Bluecross Blueshield insurance policy, but I am worried that they will treat the pregnancy as a pre-existing condition and I would not be protected under HIPAA. Please help.

  1. Pregnancy cannot be included as a pre-existing condition on a group policy, even if you didn't have any previous coverage, so as long as your new policy includes maternity coverage you will be covered.

  2. Medicaid is neither a group or individual health insurance in the commercial sense. Medicaid is a program in which you receive medical services when you meet your state's qualifications for eligibility. Were you still on Medicaid when you discovered you were pregnant? You need to read the terms of your BCBS coverage, you should receive a booklet that outlines exactly what your coverage is as well as any pre-condition clauses your policy may have. Each policy will be different dependent on the type of coverage selected by your employer.
