Question:

Is melatonin over the counter medicine in the UK, if so are there any retailers where you can buy them from?

I have heard melatonin is great for insomnia so I would like to try it but was wondering where could you get it from in the UK, I also suffer from stress so I am not sure if I can try this? Any suggestions - welcome

  1. Melatonin is used to help people get into a regular sleep pattern and to get over the effects of jet lag. In the USA it is available over the counter. In the UK it is a prescription only medicine because no drug company has been granted to sell it as there is quite a lot of money to be made. If you need melatonin you have to see your GP.


  2. You should be able to find it at a health food store.  It won't affect your anxiety levels.  Valerian root is also a great natural remedy for soothing nerves.  You can find Bathe mixes with chamomile and valerian root to take a nice soak it is very soothing and almost heaven for your nerves.

  3. melatonin is not a licensed drug in the UK, because litttle is known about it's long term side effects.

    i know that some psychiatrists will prescribe it off-license, not sure about GPs - you could always ask.
