its a big class discussion in chemistry and the teacher won't tell us until the whole class agrees

  1. exothermic b/c its releasing heat

  2. Endothermic.

    Breaking the bonds between the water molecules in the ice takes energy. This is called the "Heat of Fusion"

    The ice and water stay at 0*C until all the ice is melted.

    In nature, the warmer air or sunlight furnishes the energy.

  3. hi

    endothermic => which absorbs heat

    exothermic = which releases heat

    melting of ice = absorbs heat from surrounding or if you put it on an oven etc, so its endothermic.

    But terms exothermic or endothermic are usually used for reactions and melting of ice is not a reaction, its just a phase change which absorbs heat.

    Therefore, if I were at your place I would have said none of both, but if your teacher asks this question, then there might be an answer which is endothermic.

    hope I helped.

  4. Its an endothermic, because ice melts only when energy is supplied.

  5. Ice melting requires raising the temperature, so what does that mean?

  6. Any physical change in state in the direction solid ----> liquid-----> gas requires energy to be absorbed to overcome the force of attraction of the particles in moving from solid to liquid, or liquid to gas or solid to gas.

    Since melting of ice is a change in state of water from solid to liqiud, this requires energy, so it is an endothermic process.

    Alternatively, the reverse processes would relese energy and are exothermic.

  7. Endothermic because the ice absorbs energy to melt.

  8. If I am not mistaken, the prefix endo- refers to internal (inside) things, and exo- refers to external (outside) things. I think ice melts externally, from the outside. So I would think that it is an exothermic process.

    Good luck!
