Is mending America's 'reputation' the most important strategy?

I believe that an Obama presidency would bring several nations in line with the USA, but I am only guessing. Would a doveish foreign policy serve to strengthen existing and potential alliances or would it weaken the USA and make more likely an unstable and insecure geopolitical disposition?
