Is missing the cut a blessing in disguise for Tiger Woods?
Heading into the Greenbrier Classic, Tiger Woods was is sizzling form. Just few days back, he won his third title of the season at AT&T National.
However, playing for the first time at the Old White TPC golf course, Tiger could not find his rhythm. Once again, it was his short game that came to haunt him.
Tiger had problems while making calculated shots and putts. Tiger Woods made a fair assessment of his performance at the Greenbrier Classic.
“I did not quite have it,” Woods said. “I drove it really good today and I just did not have the feel for the distances. The ball was just going forever. I know we are at altitude, but I just could not get the ball hit pin high no matter what I did, and
subsequently, I made some bogeys”.
However, this now means that Tiger has some extra days to practice for the Open Championship, which is his real target.
Last time, in 2005, when Tiger missed a cut just after winning a title, he then went onto lift the British Open as well.
Could it be the second time lucky omen for Woods? We do not have to wait long for that as the Open starts on the 19th of July at the Royal Lytham.
Tiger feels that such a performance will not be repeated at the Open because the conditions will be totally different. However, if he needs to break Jack Nicklaus’ record, he must improve on his short game.
Phil Mickelson also missed the cut. He too would be hoping that such kind of a performance is not repeated at the Open.
Mickelson will now be featuring in the Scottish Open. This will be a good practice before the Open, as he will get acclimatise with the atmosphere.
Phil feels that he is in good shape, there are slight adjustments to be made. After his early exit from Greenbrier, this is what Phil had to say,
'It does not feel bad off the tee, it does not feel bad with the iron play, it does not feel bad chipping or putting, but I am making a lot of loose drives here or there, some loose iron shots here or there, missing some short putts here or there'.
