Is monarchy a good or bad idea?

Personally I think it's undemocratic to have an unelected head of state especially if they have real power and costs a fortune. What's your opinion?

Yes monarchy is a good thing.  No it's not a democracy, but this form of government can and still does work.  It's only when the leader is bad, evil, or fails to care for their subjects that trouble arises.

Constitutional monarchy as here in Britain is a good thing as it unites the country regardless of party politics . The monarchy brings in more money than it takes out but sadly republicans still spout myths about cost. I think its best to keep party politics from the top so I'm happy with the crown.

However, I really don't have a problem with a symbolic monarch provided they have no actual power. In fact, such monarchies can even be a point of national pride.

A good king can be infinitely better than a corrupt democracy run by morons and nincompoops.

Plus, Rousseau himself admitted that democracy is a regime more fit for a population of demigods than to mere humans. Democracy is generally wasted by fools electing their peers to run the country.

Elected heads of state cost a fortune anyway, and offer no guarantee of being any good.

So I don't have any principles against monarchies.

It costs far less to have a Queen, than to pay salaries for successive presidents, pensions for ex-presidents, staff for all of them, bodyguards, secret service men and all the rest of it.

The UK is a democracy, the government is elected and is responsible to the people. The system works well, with the Queen as an impartial head of state. Why switch to a bunch of money grubbing politicians?
