I want to be an actuary for several reasons and one reason is the salary.

If I earned the income of a security officer then would I be an actuary? Of course not.

I believe in the saying, "don't ever let anyone tell you that the worker does not know the amount of his paycheck."

Is money the ultimate reason behind why people decide to take job xyz not job abc?

  1. hello - I'm a career coach and i find that this answer varies by person and by the time of their life they are in.  some people have the ability and luxury (through savings, a highly paid significant other, inheritance, hard work the first 30 years of their career, whatever) to be able to follow their passion if "the perfect job" comes along, even if it is very low paying.  Others could have the "perfect job" hit them on the head, but because they are in high debt, just had a baby, whatever, they quite literally cannot afford to take it at this moment.  for others its a "calling" and they "have" to do whatever it is they do, and in those cases there may be some very lean years in the start, they often have great success later as they have continued to follow their passion.  being an actuary is not easy, those exams are tough, good luck.

  2. Not for me. I'm a graphic designer. I would make more money doing about anything else, including teaching, which I am qualified to do. That being said, I think the "compensation" of my job is far more than money. It's waking up and loving Mondays, it's my hilarious creative coworkers, its being able to be creative, having a flexible schedule, the health benefits of a low stress job, having time to spend with my family and making ends meet while putting a small amount into savings. I admire frugality. Being creative goes hand in hand with genius frugality. I really love my job, and the pay is the least likable thing about it....

Do people make more money because they enjoy what they do, or do they enjoy what they do because they make more money?
