  1. Depending which state's department of fisheries you check with on the Eastern Seaboard, you'll get everything from the monkfish stock being stable, to concerned, to depleted.

    The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is looking into giving the monkfish status as endangered though (see second link below).

    Just this consideration means it might be a good idea to take  monkfish off of your dinning options.  One of the odd things that may have brought the monkfish to this point is a name they acquired in the 1920s -- the "poor man's lobster".  Monkfish, when prepared right, has a taste close to that of Maine lobster; thus the demand.


  2. they are only endangered because trawlers unintentionally catch them looking for other kinds of fish.
