Why is that women who can afford to be independent ditch their spouses with no tinge of remorse or regret? If a man does that he is a cad.

  1. Not for nuns and priests it isn't.

  2. Monogamy means you have one spouse at a time, it has nothing to do with a life long commitment.

Being able to act independently means you do not have to take all the s*** from your man, it does not mean you will not fall in love with him and willingly stay with him.

Men actually do and have ditched women because we have had the resources to act independently. How our actions are valued by others (including women) is what has changed through time.

  3. No more than it was 100,000 years ago.

  4. It seems to be!

The average marriage in the USA only last a little over 4 years!

If there are children involved then at least the financial commitment goes up to 18 years...

It is believed that Hunter/Gatherer tribes, as recently as 6,000 years ago, participated in a kind of Alpha Male & Female arrangement, where only the strongest in the tribe were priveleged to mate...similar to wolves!

  5. Humans are not truly monogamous - true monogamy means that you mate for life. Humans engage in Serial Monogamy - one partner at a time.

I don't really know what kind of answer you're looking for, as I don't agree with your initial assertion. Men and women break up for a variety of reasons, and (marriage and child obligations notwithstanding) neither partner has any particular obligation to stay with the other.
