  1. I suspect that it is mostly universal.  A mother in law is always going to be wondering if her child couldn't do better and will always want to interfere.  It is only a mild admonishment though.

  2. Well lets just say I feel really sorry for my partner.

    *sighs*

  3. Could you re-phrase that please?

  4. I am not sure what you mean by taboo.. I am a mother in law 3 times over and all three of my son in laws are on great terms with me.. I love them all. I even get along well with my baby boy's (he is 19) girlfriend .. however my MIL.. was a *****.. I hate her.She was like number 10 on my list of why I divorced her son.

  5. I think its universal and I think its not just the MIL problem alone. Fathers mostly get along with both their daughters-in-law and sons-in law. Mothers usually get along with their sons-in-law but somehow butt heads with their daughters-in law.

Women run the household and will not except (be it a daughter-in-law or mother-in-law) anybody else running the show especially when it comes to their house or their children's house.

  6. Short answer: no.

  7. NO!  Why does everyone assume a taboo is universal because they hear about a few other cultures?  (apologies, that is directed at other answerers, not the questioner)

There are actually no longer any recognized universal taboos.  However, the incest taboo is very nearly universal, and patricide and cannibalism are near universal as well (at least in the modern world).

Many cultures joke about the terrible old mother-in-law, but many others revere her.

  8. Weirdly worded, but that's a cool question (I assume you mean, "Is it common in every culture to diss the mother-in-law?") I would bet not, but I'm interested to hear what others (not from the United States) have to say about this.

  9. Well...Yes.

  10. yes , in all case that i have learned about of indigenous people , mother in laws are to stay away from ,except in the USA who are not for the most part native people of  the USA.
