Can someone give me their honest opinion on moving to las vegas

when the following conditions apply

+ I currently live in los angeles and have been out of work since January and collecting unemployment.

+ I have $45,000 cash in the bank, no debts, a reliable car.

+ I want to move out to vegas and move into an apartment (which I found and got accept for a lease) at $800 per month.

+ I dont have a job offer in vegas, dont know anyone hiring , have been unable to get an job offer or interview due to being out of town.I also dont know anyone out there who can assist me . Im doing this all alone.

+ I have over 8 years of business to business sales experience and use to make $50+ per year.

Would you say its a good idea to move out and take a chance at a life out in vegas. I need to pay 6 months of rent in advance at $800 per month which I have and dont mind paying. Will I be able to secure a job in time without going broke. Last but not least, i am an occasional gambler and I would probably hit the strip for some blackjack and craps here and there. But I do use commen sence and not compulsive by any extreme...what do you think ? Should I stay in LA (I have a job offer coming very soon next month) or should I come out to vegas and try my luck there ..

  1. Stay where you are and continue to acquire education (perhaps in other fields) and skills. You at least have a hope in Los Angeles, whereas here, you have no glimmer and no support. You will be all alone. Moving without support is very difficult emotionally. If you gamble and you become depressed about anything, that can lead to other things that are no good for you. It happens every day and you see the results lurking all over Las Vegas -- people's hopes dashed.

If you were a registered nurse or perhaps a schoolteacher, I'd say, "Go for it."

If Las Vegas is really your dream, you should spend the coming years preparing for the move. You should get to know Las Vegas a little better by visiting a lot. You should definitely do things to improve your chances of getting a good job. It would really be nice if you had a girlfriend or a partner to move with.

I met a young handsome guy in Vegas. He left North Carolina because he couldn't find work. He moved to Vegas and got a job in a bank immediately, but he was totally miserable because he didn't know anybody and he was lonely as heck. He probably returned to NC, as he was already going back every chance he could to be with his family.

When and if the economy changes for the better, that will be the time to make your move. I predict that when the tide turns, Vegas will be booming all over again.

  2. Stay where you have a chance for a job.  With the economy of foreclosures (highest in NV), casinos backing off from on-going (stopping mid build) of new properties, gas prices, food prices, unemployment (casinos are laying off), this is NOT the time to move here.

Jobs are not easy to get and I am not sure what unemployment benefits you would get moving here.

$800 a month for an apartment is cheap here and usually not where you want to live (check out www.lasvegasnow.com).  You will need first, last and security plus security deposits for utilities.  Having a reliable car helps because the bus system is ........

Sales jobs are really hurting.  Major furniture stores are closing as well as other business in malls and independent.  Real estate is awful.  I know RE people who have gone from loan manager or sales to trying reverse mortgages to make ends meet.

Gambling can be controlled but when money is tight, NO gambling should be the rule.  There is NO secret way to win that is why those billion dollar casinos have been built.  The bottom line is the win is on the house side.

Perhaps in a couple of years the economy will improve.  This is the worse the state of Nevada has been in decades.

  3. Stay in L.A. until your job offer there, because you might get the job. Vegas might be a risky move.

  4. Vegas is so close to LA. Apply for some jobs there, from LA. Then when you get some interviews lined up, just drive up there for a day or three. It is only a 5 hour trip to get there.

Stay at a cheap motel like the Motel 6 on Dean Martin Drive.

Do not move to a new city unless you have a job lined up first.

  5. STAY THERE!!  Vegas is a TRAP!!

  6. Unemployment benefits generally run for six months.  You may have run out at this point.

You need to do something.  Do not stop interviewing for a new job even if you think a job offer is coming very soon.  See if you can set up job interviews in Las Vegas remotely.  If you can get a couple interviews on the same day, then travel and explore a new city.

  7. Stick in LA see what the job offer has.  If it doesn't pan through, and you want to really shake things up then do it!

I would personally recommend that you wait to hit the casinos until you do have a new job.  I know you say you have control, but when you don't have a job to get up to in the morning you can find yourself slipping, and spending your way into self destruction!

Once you do have a good job again, you can go and play and have fun like you normally would!

I am sure with your experience, you could get a decent job.

    I hope this helps!
