Question:

Is mummification still practiced today?

I always thought being buried and being burnt after death both sounded awful, so I decided that being mummified would be the best thing for me after I die! My mom thinks I'm crazy (I'm a teenager, so I don't even know WHY I'm worried about this!) and she told me it's not even done anymore. Is it really impossible to be mummified anymore??

Thanks for any help. :)

  1. Yes, there are actually a couple of places in Utah that will mummify you, and bury you  in a stone crypt carved into living rock, if you wish.

  2. It's possible. Some experiments have been done to replicate the Egyptian process. Remove internal organs, pack the remains in natron (salt) for a couple of months, the wrap in linen.

Burial is the big issue. The dry climate of Egypt really did most of the work. The mummification process killed off most of the bacteria and the climate did the preservation.Sticking the remains in the wet ground will waste the mummification effort.

Being freeze dried is a possibility. Some Inuit remains were found that had been naturally freeze died and it's being promoted as a "green" burial method. Given, the current practice is to break the remains into powder and scatter the dust, but no doubt that could be avoided.

  3. It's still possible. You can donate your body to science and have scientists mummify you... There was this documentary on TV a while back about that. Some guy put in his Will that he wanted to be mummified. Also, there's always "accidental mummies". Nature itself will sometimes, under the right conditions, preserve the human body after it has died.

  4. Yes-Russia still mummifies Lenin every year.  Very interesting story-worth checking out-I was engrossed.  Apparently they have a top secret way of using a secret chemical that makes him look so human.  I'm not sure about any other stories, but Lenin for sure.

  5. Idk, I think people prefer to have you bury and not wasting any  cloth to  wrap you :D

but once you die you die, why try to be mummy it's not like you're going to come back *scary stuff* or anything right? just rest in peace :)
