recently i have caught my son masturbating a few times and I'm concerned that he might be doing it 4-5 times a day.... is this too much?

There's no such thing as too much.  It's self-limiting.  If he orgasms faster than his body can replace hormones and endorphins, he'll just lose interest for a while until his body catches up.  

If you keep finding your son masturbating, then either you're not respecting his privacy or he needs to learn to keep his door closed and latched.

The frequency is probably related to his testosterone levels. Whether or not it is too frequently could be answered by asking - Is it interfering with his normal activities. I.E. study, home jobs & normal mixing with friends.

If the answer is yes - the maybe he needs some guidance. I know that won't be easy as parents are the last ones kids listen to. You could perhaps refer him to http://www.kidshealth.org/teens. absolutely not. he is totally normal masturbating several times a day. surely better than having s*x :) and besides, i'm sure at some point, you too would have been tugging away several times a day. this is normal and i wouldn't be too concerned. he surely wouldn't be doing it for an extended period anyway. if he was, i would think that he was most probably bored and had nothing else to do. try having more family activities for instance or encourage him to go out with his friends, though be sure to ensure that his friends are of the reputable type.
